ALGIERS, 16 February 2021 – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is preparing to dissolve parliament soon and call for early legislative elections, a news report said Monday.

Tebboune is “preparing to… dissolve parliament in the coming days,” Echorouk newspaper reported Monday, citing Abdelaziz Belaid, head of the Future Front Party.

The decision is like to be announced before next February 18, when Algerians commemorate National Martyr Day.

Belaid, who was one of the aspirants for the presidency during Algeria’s last presidential ballot, told reporters that this was his understanding from an audience he had Saturday with Tebboune.

Algeria’s last parliamentary elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect the 462 members of the People’s National Assembly.

The ruling National Liberation Front lost 44 seats, but remained the majority party in parliament, with a 164 lawmakers.
