ALGIERS, 29 December 2020 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria returned home Monday from a hospital in Germany, fully recovered from his COVID-19 infection.

Tebboune, 75, was last seen in public last October 15 before during the visit to Algeria of France’s foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The 75-year-old was advised to self-isolate last October 24 after one of his close staff tested positive for COVID-19.

His health deteriorated and he was evacuated four days after for treatment in an undisclosed German hospital.

His long absence fuelled speculation over his ability to govern or finish his first term as president.

Last December 13, Tebboune posted a video on social media in which he said he was on the way to full recovery and would return to the country within a “few weeks”.

Tebboune was elected last year on a promise to build “a new Algeria”.
