Security services at Mosaganem said the victims were migrants trying to sneak into Europe.

The boat accident probably happened days earlier because security services said the bodies were decaying already.

The unfortunate castaways included five women, a man and a five-year-old child.

It is estimated that 979 migrants died in 2020 while struggling to cross the Mediterranean into Europe.

The deadliest in recent memory was 2016 when over 5,000 migrants died trying to cross the Mediterranean into Europe.

According to Statista – a data collection site – the accurate number of deaths recorded in the Mediterranean cannot be ascertained.

It is, however, estimated that about 12,000 people drowned and their mortal remains were never recovered between the four years from 2014 and 2018 when migrants were taking the perilous journey in hundreds of thousands.
