ALGIERS, 9 March 2021 – At least seven people have been killed in floods and three others are unaccounted for, following torrential rains in northwestern Algeria, the country’s civil protection agency said.

Three men, two women, a five-year-old boy and a girl of 12 died after vehicles they were travelling in were swept away in the Chlef region on Monday, the agency said in a statement.

A search and rescue mission is still ongoing for three other people, including a child.

The three were traveling in one of the vehicles when they were reportedly swept away by the waters of the flood.

More rains were expected to pour down on Algeria’s northern regions and flash flood alerts had been issued for Wednesday.
