Assets of Jailed Critic Auctioned in Rwanda

KIGALI, RWANDA, 18 JUNE 2018 – Assets from the family and business of Diane Rwigara, a jailed critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, have been auctioned by Rwandan authorities.

The Rwanda Revenue Authority said it sold the family’s tobacco business for almost $2m.

Along with her mother, who is also in prison, Rwigara faces charges of forgery and inciting insurrection. Rwandan authorities say they seek to recover about $7m in tax arrears.

The family and opponents of Kagame say the charges are politically motivated. Rwigara had plan to run against Kagame in the 2017 presidential election, but was disqualified by the country’s election commission.

Kagame went on to win the ballot with 98.63 percent of the vote.
