BLANTYRE, MALAWI, 18 JUNE 2018 – The former president of Malawi, Joyce Banda, announced Monday that she will seek her party’s nomination for next year’s presidential election.

“I will be a candidate for the convention” of the Popular Party (IPP), Banda told reporters.

Banda, 68, returned to Malawi recently at the end of a four-year period of voluntary exile. She left the country in 2014 after her defeat in the presidential election.

A scandal known as “Cashgate” erupted in 2013 after an international audit revealed that $30 million had been siphoned off the country’s coffers for the benefit of dozens of government officers, political leaders and businessmen.

An arrest warrant was issued in 2017 against Banda who has denied any involvement in swindling.

No date has been set for the convention of the People’s Party Congress of which Banda remains president.
