Nigeria Suffers Setbacks in War Against Boko Haram

President Muhammadu Buhari admits that Nigeria has suffered setbacks in its fight against Islamic extremists of Boko Haram.

The jihadists have launched fresh attacks in the country’s restive northeast at a time when Abuja was claiming victory.

Buhari won elections in 2015 promising to end the Islamist insurgency.

A series of attacks on the eve of his reelection bid next month undermine his claim that the group has been virtually defeated.

More than 27,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since 2009. As many as 1.8 million people have been rendered homeless by the insurgency.

In an interview broadcast Monday night by Arise TV, Buhari sounded less triumphalist.

He admitted that the hit-and-run raids of the jihadists were hard to counter using conventional means.
