Sudanese General on trial for attempted rebellion

Spread the News

Juba, 7 February 2019 – A general of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has been court martialed in Juba, capital of South Sudan, accused of treason and attempting to rebel against South Sudanese President Salva Kiir.

The court martial which opened Monday (4 February) charges General Stephen Buoy Rolnyang of “treason offences related to insecurity” and for “disobeying his hierarchy”.

He was arrested in May 2018 after failing to report, as ordered, to army headquarters in Juba.

After a brief period of peace, South Sudan relapsed into civil war in December 2013 after President Kiir accused his former vice president Rick Machar of plotting a coup d’Etat.
