ACCRA, 2 March 2021 – Pedophiles and rapist Cameroonian soldiers have ramped up acts of rape and sexual exploitation of girls, women, and children, a recent study and media reports show.

Last week, Human Rights Watch (HRW) belatedly published details of the mass rape, one year ago, of at least 20 girls and women in a revenge attack in Ebam village.

The rape spree unfolded in the southern zone of the self-declared breakaway Republic of Ambazonia formerly the United Nations British Trust Territory of Southern Cameroons.

An audio gone viral Sunday on social media shares the ordeal of a child victim at the hands of a pedophile soldier ordering her to submit to acts of sexual exploitation or face death.

The audio has ignited outrage and has renewed calls from rights groups and parents for the United Nations and the Free World to field a fact-finding mission to document abuses and bring perpetrators to justice.

“Pedophilia now among atrocity crimes @PR_Paul_Biya’s genocidal troops are exacting against Ambazonia,” wrote journalist Innocent Chia on Twitter.

“It’s time @POTUS shows what this new administration means by action NOW,” read another posting on the Twitter handle @MarkBareta addressed to the President of the United States (POTUS).

On the audio, the voice of a girl child can be heard narrating her nightmarish encounter with a soldier.

“He said if I’ve ever slept with a boy and I’m telling him a lie he will call my parents to come to school,” the girl child can be heard narrates in a trembling voice in the audio.

Human rights campaigners who are not disclosing the identity of the girl child say the sexual assault on the child unfolded after soldiders fired in the air upon entering a school campus, forcing teachers and hundreds of pupils to flee.

Some of the girls who were cut off from fleeing by some of the soldiers molested them, demanding the pupils to perform sexual acts on them.

“He said I should remove my dresses,” the girl child says in the one minute, 52 seconds long audio.

“I refused. He said if I didn’t…he will shoot me,” the voice says before adding: “I removed my dresses”.

“He said I should ‘chook’ (Pidgin English for “put”) my mouth on his penis (perform oral sex). I refused and he took the gun to shoot me with,” the girl child says of the sexual assault.

The account suggests that senior officers in the chain of command gave approval to the pedophile, rapist soldier by standing at a distance, giving space and time for the soldier to abuse his victim.

The soldier dragged the girl child into an outdoor bathroom, away from fellow soldiers.

As horrific as the oral sex acts the girl endured, the situation was could have been worse.

Stories abound in Ambazonia of soldiers leaving their victims bloodied or killing their victims after the act.

The soldier had ordered the girl child to remove a condom from a sachet and hand to him just before the commanding officer ordered the pedophile soldier to come out so that the team of soldiers could move on.

The Ghana-based African Human Rights Council said Tuesday that the audio should serve as a reminder to Cameroonian authorities of the impunity with which soldiers deployed to Southern Cameroons are abusing Ambazonian girls, women and children.

“To thank us for doing a good job, our commanders would give us the night off, authorizing us to go into the community, the village or the town where we were deployed to have sex,” a former gendarme officer who deserted and has fled into exile told rights advocates.

“We would generally target sex workers and arrest them ‘en masse’. Then threaten them with prolonged detention until the sex workers would offer us sexual pleasures in exchange for freedom,” the gendarme officer explained.

The gendarme said their commanders called it one of the few fringe benefits of the war in Ambazonia.

The attacks on the most vulnerable Ambazonian girls, women and children is not limited to those who continue to live in Southern Cameroons.

Many of the internally displaced, especially those who fled the war across the border into French-speaking Cameroon, have resorted to sex work in order to survive.

A group of mostly underaged Ambazonian girls who have taken up sex work in the Bonaberi neighborhood of Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, have told of nights when soldiers would storm an inn they have converted into a brothel to demand sexual favors.

“We would be arrested and threatened with being taken into detention unless we had sex with the soldiers,” one of the sex workers said.

In the war setting that prevails across Ambazonia, soldiers who are carried away by the power their weapons allow them to wield, have stopped at nothing to obtain sexual favor.

In one incident in Ekok, a border town with neighboring Nigeria, three soldiers stopped a couple returning from their farm and asked the husband to watch the three soldiers demonstrate how he is supposed to satisfy his wife sexually.

Then the three soldiers took turns raping the woman while the husband watched.

Not only has the chain of command condoned, approved or been complici in rape and acrts of pedophilia, it has also done everything to prevent accountability.

Commanders have transferred offending officers to different cities to shield them from facing justice where they are accused of rape.

A gendarme officer who raped a 17-year-old breast-feeding mother in the town of Bamenda, northern part of Ambazonia, was transferred out of town on claims that he needed to be tried before the military tribunal in the capital, Yaounde.

The move denied the victim and her lawyers any possibility of pressing charges against the gendarme officer and two others who watched and provided cover for the rapist gendarme as he sexually abused the breast-feeding mother on the bathroom floor of a filling station.

The pretext used to stop the breastfeeding mother before going on to rape her was to demand that she produce an identity card.

Human rights groups have relayed several incidents of gang rape.

One of them occurred in early May 2020 in the small village of Mankwi in the traditional kingdom of Bafut situated in the outskirts of Bamneda, chief town of Ambazonia’s northern zone.

The victims in Makwi were 13 secondary school students who were rounded up on claims they did not produce identity cards and moved into a makeshift camp in the outskirts of the village where they were gang raped.

The soliders who raped the students came from the Fifth Military Legion in Bamenda and were reportedly given the night off by their commander to go into Mankwi and satisfy thir sexual impulses.

A grandmother who was going by the makeshift camp on her way from the farm was bundled into the makeshift camp and gang raped as well.

She fell into unconsciousness at some point during the gang and the soldiers dropped her off on the side of the road to die.

Good Samaritans found her and whisked off into a hospital for medical attention.

Two days later, the over 60-year-old grandmother told reporters from the hospital that she was still in such “enormous pain in her private part” that she could not still walk.

When the story broke, officials in Bamenda denied the accusations tjat soldiers from the Fifth Legion were to blame while suggesting that the government would provide assistance to any victims who came forward.

None of the 13 secondary schoolgirls took the officials up on their offer, with some of them telling human rights activists in Bafut that the soldiers had warned them that if anyone heard about their rape, they would not only be raped the next time, but also executed.

Family members of the over 60-year-old grandmother who was still at the hospital at the time turned down any offer of assistance.

“We don’t have anything to demand neither from the government nor the military in Cameroon,” a granddaughter of the victim told reporters, adding: “because this is not the first time a similar incident has happened in the North West. We leave everything in the hands of God to render justice”.

In late 2016, young girls kidnapped and taken away in military trucks from the University of Buea into sex slavery at the training facilities of Cameroon’s Brigade d’Intervention Rapide (BIR) in the town of Limbe have never been heard from again.

In July 2020, the story emerged of two internally displaced Ambazonian ladies who were forced into sex slavery with soldiers deployed to the town of Muyuka in Ambazonia’s southern zone.

The ladies said they were asked to return every night to satisfy the soldiers sexually otherwise the soldiers would conclude that the first time they did business with them, it was really as spies on behalf of self-defense volunteers known as Ambazonian Restoration Forces.

The two ladies had to flee Muyuka after a week of enduring gang rape by several soldiers each night.

Many young Ambazonian ladies have ended up dead.

Two young ladies who were accused in the summer of 2020 of spying on behalf of pro-independence fighters ended up having their throats slit on video by unidentified people.

Soldiers targeted one lady in Bamenda after video of her giving an Ambazonian boyfriend a sexy lap dance popped up on social media.

A former prison guard, Florence Ayafor, was targeted by unidentified gunmen, who gang raped, mutilated and beheaded her, filming parts of the atrocities and posting them on social media.

The Biya regime was quick to blame pro-independence fighters for the crime, but the attackers were later connected to a traditional ruler who worked in partnership with the regime in perpetrating a massacre in Pinyin village early in 2018.

One of the gendarme officers who was maddened by the lap dance and the de facto confession that she was cheating on him had her attacked and her throat slit.

Three students of a secondary school – Cameroon Protestant College in Bali, situated in the outskiorts of Bamenda – were gang raped in 2019.

Video posted on social media showed soldiers forcing the girls to “swim” in mud on a dirt road under orders from gun-touting guards.

The soldiers reportedly met the three girls strolling with a male student and immediately attacked and beat up the male student for reportedly misleading the girls whereas they should be focused on their education.

The boy was half-stripped and tortured by the soldiers who had him lying face up on the ground outside a gendarmerie brigade.

Once they girls were allowed to leave the mud, they were led by the soldiers  at gunpoing into the camp where they were offered water to take showers in an outdoor bathroom.

Relatives of the schoolgirls later told human rights activisits that as the girls were about to complete their showers, they found themselves surrounded by naked soldiers who gang raped them.

In the video of CPC Bali schoolgirls, one of the commanding officers can be heard telling his colleagues just before the video stops that it is time for the soldiers to swing into action.

Just before the girls are led into the barracks, the senior officer shouts out to the others that he has “declared the education center open”.

A soldier who deserted the regime has told rights advocates that those words are code for any soldiers who want to get ready to rape the schoolgirls.

The schoolboy who was out strolling with the girls later said the torture he suffered at the hands of the soldiers included his manhood being burnt with hot melted particles from plastic paper held over the flame of a lighter.

The threat of gang rape has also been used to terrorize female activists into silence.

The Woman Who Objected to the Minister

A woman who shouted “objection!” to a speech in which Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji claimed that the country’s tyrant was ordained by God to lord it over the people found herself quickly forced into silence.

She was arrested after the speech and briefly detained by security forces in the town of Kumba, southern zone of Ambazonia, who released her warning that if they heard one more word from her, they would send five soldiers infected with the HIV virus to gang rape her.

Despite numerous credible reports of rape on thousands of girls, women and children since President Paul Biya declared war on Southern Cameroons on 30 November 2017, not a single soldier has faced justice of any kind.

The regime has made it impossible even for parliamentarians to demand accountability of soldiers who rape students.

After decrying the rape of his niece by soldiers at the University of Buea in late 2016, Hon. Joseph Wirba, a member of parliament for the opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF) found himself ostracized from the party by leadership, prevented from raising the issue in parliament and, finally, chased into exile in England.
