ADDIS ABABA, 9 January 2021 – Ethiopian forces say they killed two top officials of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in a raid last Thursday.
Addis Ababa claims that those killed in the raid include TPLF S[pokesperson Sekoture Getachew and the former head of the Tigray Finance Bureau, Daniel Assefa.
The former manager of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority Zeray Asgedom were reportedly also killed in the military operation.
The deployment department of Ethiopia’s army also said nine other TPLF leaders were arrested.
The war in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray was launched last November 4.
Thousands of people have been killed, 60,000 people have been forced into exile in neighboring Sudan and millions of people have been internally displaced by the fighting.
In mid-December, Addis Ababa announced that it would provide 200,000 euros in reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest or killing of top TPLF leaders.
The Ethiopian government last November issued arrest warrants for more than 60 senior leaders of the TPLF.
The TPLF ruled and dominated Ethiopian politics for the 30 years until Abiy Ahmed was appointed prime minister in 2018.
