MOMBASA, 7 January 2021 – The Mombasa County Government in Kenya has fired 86 doctors after they failed to report to their work stations.
The doctors given pink slips were terminated simply for one reason: they dared to stage a strike.
The biggest union of doctors and pharmacists in Kenya called the strike to protest the failure by the management of government-owned hospitals to provide doctors and other healthcare workers with protective gear as they battle to save people in a time of coronavirus.
The Acting Secretary-General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Chibanzi Mwachonda, is among the 86 fired.
A special disciplinary board of the couny government ruled that “all doctors who have failed, refused and/or neglected to return to work be dismissed from County Services,”
The doctors have been sent letters and advance copies have been shared to their emails, a statement signed by an official of the county govnerment, Jeizan Faruk, read in part.
