MONROVIA, 25 May 2021 – Liberian President George Weah Opong has congratulated his son, Timothy Weah, after his French club, Lille, won the French league title.
“As a winner of the Ligue 1 title myself, I know it takes immense determination, hard work, commitment, and steadfastness week after week to emerge as a champion,” President Weah wrote in a message on the presidential website.
“This is a feat we know Tim always wanted,” added the Liberian leader who is a former international footballer and winner of the 1995 FIFA Best Player of the Year.
Weah’s son struggled through many injuries in the course of the season, playing 28 games and helping his team deliver the goals in the position of center forward.
Weah is one of Africa’s best-known and leading award winners.
The professional footballer turned politician turned president is a former two-time winner of the Best African Player of the Year Award.
His impressive career saw him play for clubs in his native Liberia, then in the First Division League in the Cameroons (Tonnerre Yaounde), in France, where he played for Paris Sainte Germaine and Monaco; in Italy (AC Milan) and in the United Kingdom (Chelsea and Manchester City).
