MAPUTO, 3 November 2020 – Armed Islamist militants have beheaded nine villagers in a wave of attacks in the northern Mozambican district of Muidumbe in Cabo Delgado province.
The attack has been blamed on al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda affiliate which has held control of the northern port of Mocimboa da Praia since last August.
The jihadists took the villagers hostage before executing them last Saturday and Sunday.
Police spokespersons have said the jihadists are not holding any more hostages.
Property was looted and destroyed during the attacks.
The government of Mozambique blames the jihadists for the murders of more than 1,500 people.
More than 300,000 people have been internally displaced by the three-year insurgency.
