PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 20 JUNE 2018 – A South African Member of Parliament (MP) Sibusiso Radebe, was killed Tuesday night in what appears to be a botched car hijacking.

Radebe, an MP of South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) was shot and killed while sitting in a car with a friend.

The killing sent shock waves across South Africa and highlighted the gravity of crime in a country where killings remain unacceptably high.

Murders in South Africa cell from 18,673 in 2015/2016 to 19,016 in 2016/2017.
Police reports show a spike in political killings, blaming a majority of political assassinations on feuds within the ANC in the coastal provinces of KwaZulu Natal.

The exact motive of Radebe’s killing remains unclear.
