ISUOFIA, 2 April 2021 – Three police officers have been killed in an assassination attempt on former Nigerian Central Bank Governor Charles Soludo.
The unidentified gunmen stormed a campaign event in town of Isuofia community town hall organized by the Soludo Campaign for Governor.
The former central banker is running to become the next governor of his native Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria.
Gubernatorial elections will be held in November 2021.
The assailants opened fire on the gathering, appearing to have prioritized shooting dead the police officers providing security to the event.
A close aide to Soludo was abducted by the gunmen.
Nigerian security officials say more than 15 police officers have been killed in southeastern Nigeria during attacks by suspected criminal gangs.
Some of the attacks have targeted police stations during which the gunmen have looted weapons and ammunition.
The violent campaigns by Boko Haram militants and criminal gangs specialized in kidnappings for ransom have made Nigeria’s northern regions the most insecure parts of the country.
