KIGALI, 21 April 2021 – Rwanda’s National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) has brought forward elections to its leadership which will hold before the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The ballot follows the resignation earlier this month of Valens Munyabagisha.

Elections were initially due to be held next October 9 but will now hold next May 8.

Postponed on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now set to take place between July 23 and August 8, 2021.

Holding elections later would have violated “the provisions of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) rules and regulations,” according to Jean Baptiste Murema, president of the National Paralympic Committee of Rwanda cited Wednesday by The New Times newspaper.
