DAKAR, 27 February 2021 – Lawmakers in Senegal have stripped an opposition MP of his parliamentary immunity opening the way for him to answer possible rape charges.
The MP from Senegal’s main opposition political party, Ousmane Sonko, has denied the allegations of rape.
The MP, who is 46-years-old and leads the up-and-coming opposition Pastef party, has accused President Macky Sall, who is serving his second and last term in office, of conspiring against him.
Sonko’s supporters protested last month when the rape victim, an employee in a beauty salon, filed rape charges against the MP.
Sonko was one of the presidential aspirants in the 2019 ballot, finishing honorably in third place and seen ever since by many observers, as a strong presidential contender going forward.
