JUBA, 9 January 2021 – South Sudanese government forces on Saturday attacked a base of the armed opposition SPLA-IO in Maban County in the country’s Upper Nile.

“Heavy fighting has been on since midnight (Friday) until the morning hours (of Saturday) between the SSPDF forces and the SPLA-IO,” a spokesperson for SPLA-IO, Brigadier-General William Gatjiath Deng said in a statement.

Fierce fighting was still ongoing at nighfall Saturday, Sudans Post reported citng the content of a phone call they had with General Gatjiath.

“The fighting is going on and the government forces supported by local militia have attacked our base with tanks,” the SPLA-IO spokesperson said.

He described the fighting as an “unacceptable violation of the revitalized peace agreement”.

The parties to the war in South Sudan reach a ceasefire agreement in January 2020 following a summit in Rome. .
