ZANZIBAR, 2 November 2020 – Ismail Jussa, an opposition leader in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, was injured in brutal attacks on his person as election results were announced.

Jussa and other opposition leaders on the mainland have said the election, last Wednesday, was a sham.

The ruling party won nearly every single seat.

Jeffrey Smith, an American rights activist, who rose to prominence after playing a major role in the ousting of former Gambian leader Yaya Jameh, warned in a tweet Saturday that “this is a death knell for democracy with major regional implications”.
