DODOMA, 30 March 2021 – Tanzania’s finance minister, Philip Isdor Mpango has been confirmed Vice-President by the Tanzanian parliament.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan nominated Mpango to the position on Tuesday, according to an announcement by the parliamentary speaker Job Ndugai ahead of the approval vote.
MPs applauded as Mpango’s name was mentioned.
Speaking after his nomination, Mpango said he was surprised but ready to take on the responsibility of the east African country’s next Vice-President.
An economist, Mpango has held several positions in the Tanzanian government.
Prior to serving in the country’s cabinet, Mpango served as a senior economist at the World Bank Group from 2002 to 2006.
He was only one of two ministers who were re-appointed at the start of his second term of office by former president John Pombe Magufuli.
Mpango previously served as economic adviser to former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.
Last month, Mpango was seen in a viral video coughing during a press conference while paying tribute to senior government t officials who had died reportedly from complications stemming from their infection with COVID-19.
Born on 14 July 1957, Mpango was elected to parliament in 2015.
He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1996.
