DAR ES SALAAM, 30 March 2021 – The Director-General of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Deusdedit Kakoko has been arrested over allegations of embezzling 3.6 billion Tanzanian shillings – an estimated $1.5 million.
Tanzania’s newly-elected President Samia Suluhu Hassan last March 28 suspended Kakoko from his duties..
In a statement announcing the suspension, the president argued that senior officials needed to be held accountable after junior officials faced the music over embezzlement charges.
Suluhu Hassan further ordered the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) to urgently look into the claims.
She also issued a stern warning to other institutions mentioned in the report including the Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) for adverse mention in the report.
Suluhu Hassan has vowed to pursue the strict legacy and “zero tolerance for corruption” policy of former president John Pombe Magufuli.
The former president’s crusade against corruption and incompetence in public office earned him the nickname “The Bulldozer”.
