LAGOS, 3 November 2020 – The Nigerian army says it has opened an internal investigation into the killing of unarmed, peaceful protesters in Lagos, the country’s economic capital.
The shooting was broadcast live on social media, provoking worldwide indignation.
The protester was killed at a spontaneous rally decrying police violence on civilians.
Nigeria’s defense minister announced the investigations Tuesday at a press conference in the capital, Abuja.
He promised that the findings of the investigation will be made public.
The minister hinted that the video was doctored and that the killers may have been criminals dressed in military gear.
Eyewitnesses and rights groups maintain that the killers were soldiers.
