LUSAKA, 27 December 2010 – Five people are feared dead and hundreds have been displaced after a dam in Mumbwa District of Zambia’s Central Province burst.

The area “has experienced heavy rains in the last two days which has left a trail of destruction,” said Chanda Kabwe, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit Coordinator.

Many people have sought refuge on top of their roofs as the entire area is flooded, Kabwe told the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).

The number of people affected by the floods is yet to be ascertained.
