HARARE, 4 November 2020 – The First Lady of Zimbabwe, Auxillia Mnangagwa, has challenged claims by the police that she has links to gold smugglers.

Local news reports have suggested that the First Lady may have been benefiting from Henrietta Rushwaya, who was arrested last Monday at the Harare International Airport as she was about to leave the country for Dubai.

Six kilograms of gold were found in Rushwaya’s hand luggage.

Police said she was arrested because she did not have the necessary export permits.

First Lady Mnangagwa has challenged the police to produce “any incriminating evidence” linking her to Rushwaya. She insisted that her son was also not involved.

Zimbabwe is a major gold producer.

Powerful politicians and smugglers have benefited from illegal exports of gold and profiteering from its official sales.
